Thornwick
Fishing Village
The Town Scandal
Harbor master Edric Moss has been secretly skimming tariffs from incoming fish merchants for years, funneling the coin to his lover, the apothecary Sable Vorn, who uses it to buy rare alchemical reagents of questionable legality. The town's beloved net-mender, Priya Saltfingers, witnessed a midnight exchange on the docks three weeks ago and hasn't decided whether her loyalty to the village or her fear of Edric will win out.

Edric Moss
Human · Harbor Master
Personality
Charming and politically shrewd, deeply paranoid, generous to those who keep his secrets
Backstory
Edric grew up the son of a failed fisherman and clawed his way into his position of authority through favors, flattery, and the occasional bribe. He fell into a clandestine romance with Sable Vorn six years ago when she nursed him back from a near-fatal fever, and since then he has bent the harbor's books to fund her work and their secret life. He suspects old Priya Saltfingers saw something the night he moved Sable's last shipment, and the worry is eating him alive.

Dialogue
“Welcome to Thornwick, traveler! Finest harbor on the Greymere Coast — I'll stake my ledger on it. You'll find no finer anchorage, and no fairer tariffs. Ha!”
“*lowers voice* You didn't come off the midnight tide, did you? No? Good. Just checking. The sea brings all manner of... cargo... after dark.”
“Priya's a fine woman, salt of the earth. Bit too sharp-eyed for her own good, if you take my meaning. You happen to chat with her today? Anything... interesting come up?”
Sable Vorn
Tiefling · Apothecary and unlicensed Alchemist
Personality
Intellectually obsessive, outwardly warm but privately calculating, carries enormous guilt she refuses to examine
Backstory
Sable arrived in Thornwick fifteen years ago as a wandering hedge-witch, welcomed only because the village had no healer and the winter was brutal. She built a respectable apothecary above the docks, but her true passion is alchemical research into a cure for the Greyscale Lung, the disease that killed half a fishing village to the north — including her own mother. Edric Moss's stolen coin funds reagents she could never afford legitimately, and she tells herself the ends justify the means, though lately young Corwin Teal's persistent hero-worship makes her feel the hypocrisy more acutely.

“Come in, come in — mind the dried kelp, it's not decorative, it's drying. There's a difference. Sit. What ails you? Be specific, I despise vagueness.”
“I have saved fourteen lives in this village. Fourteen. I ask that you weigh that against whatever rumors are currently circulating about my supply chain.”
“*pauses over a bubbling flask* The sea gives and the sea takes, they say here. I've always thought that was a coward's way of accepting loss. I prefer to negotiate with fate directly.”
Priya Saltfingers
Dwarf · Net-mender and retired Fisher
Personality
Blunt as a boat hull, fiercely loyal to Thornwick itself rather than any individual, talks in sea proverbs
Backstory
Priya has mended nets on the Thornwick docks for forty years, and before that she fished them for thirty more. She knows every soul in this village like she knows knots — by feel, in the dark. Three weeks ago she couldn't sleep and walked to the pier, where she saw Edric Moss hand a crate to Sable Vorn under lantern-light, followed by an exchange of coin and a kiss that told her everything. She has said nothing yet, partly because she loves this town and fears the scandal, and partly because she once watched Finn Brackwater grow from a scrawny orphan into a good man, and she doesn't know how the truth would break him.

“A net full of holes catches nothing but regret, as my gran used to say. You look like a person carrying a question. Ask it straight or go home.”
“I've seen seventy-two winters on this coast. You know what I've learned? The tide don't keep secrets. It just keeps moving, and the secrets wash up eventually whether you like it or not.”
“*squints at the harbor master's window* Some folks think sitting at the top of the mast means you see further. Sometimes it just means you're the last to know the hull is cracking.”
Finn Brackwater
Half-Elf · Fisherman and part-time Town Constable
Personality
Earnest and idealistic to a fault, eager to prove himself, slow to anger but devastating when pushed
Backstory
Finn was an orphan left at Thornwick's temple as an infant, raised communally by the village and apprenticed to Edric Moss at age twelve, who he regards with uncomplicated hero-worship. He took on the constable's badge two years ago hoping to make Edric proud, and he enforces the town's laws with sincere, occasionally naive dedication. Priya Saltfingers is the closest thing to family he's ever known, and he would be shattered to learn she is keeping something enormous from him — almost as shattered as he would be to learn what his beloved mentor has been doing with the harbor's books.

Dialogue
“Constable Brackwater. And yes, before you ask, I do both jobs — constable mornings, nets in the afternoon. Thornwick's not so big that a man can't be useful twice in one day.”
“Master Moss taught me that a harbor runs on trust. Every vessel, every merchant, every coin — it all floats on trust. I believe that. I really do.”
“*grips badge self-consciously* Priya keeps looking at me like she wants to say something and then doesn't. Probably nothing. She's just old, she gets... contemplative. Right?”
Corwin Teal
Human · Apprentice Alchemist and Fisher's Mate
Personality
Recklessly curious, talks faster than he thinks, genuinely kind-hearted in a chaotic way
Backstory
Corwin is seventeen and absolutely certain he is destined for something larger than gutting fish, a conviction that Sable Vorn accidentally confirmed when she let him watch an experiment two years ago and he immediately started pestering her to teach him everything. He works the morning boats to pay his keep and spends every free hour in Sable's apothecary, where he is developing a genuine talent he doesn't yet have the discipline to match. He and Finn Brackwater grew up like brothers and compete endlessly, though Corwin's competition is affectionate while Finn sometimes takes it personally.

“Did you know that rendered devilfish ink mixed with salt crystal and — okay, Sable says I'm not supposed to tell people about that yet. Forget I said anything. What were we talking about?”
“Miss Vorn is the smartest person in Thornwick. Maybe on the whole coast. She's going to cure Greyscale Lung, I know it. I want to help. I'm going to help. She just needs to admit I'm ready.”
“*drops a glass jar, catches it just before it shatters, grins* See? Reflexes. That's the fishing. The fishing is actually very good training for alchemy. Nobody gives me credit for that.”
Maren Duskhollow
Half-Elf · Traveling Merchant and unlicensed Investigator
Personality
Cool and methodical, speaks in understatements, has a dry humor that people mistake for coldness
Backstory
Maren arrived in Thornwick six weeks ago as a spice merchant, which is true, and as an agent for a coastal merchant guild investigating reports of tariff fraud in Greymere harbors, which she has told precisely no one. She has been quietly building a picture of Edric Moss's operation, and the unusual quality of Sable Vorn's imported reagents caught her eye as a thread worth pulling. She and Priya Saltfingers bonded over a shared love of terrible weather and honest card games, and Maren feels a complicated guilt about the fact that her investigation will devastate people that old woman loves.

“Lovely village. Very... atmospheric. I find I keep extending my stay. The fish here are exceptional. That's the only reason. Purely the fish.”
“I've visited forty-three port towns on this coast. You'd be amazed how similar they all are at the surface and how completely different they are six inches down. Thornwick is... interesting. Six inches down.”
“*to Priya, quietly* You know, in my experience, the thing a good person is afraid to say is usually the thing that most needs saying. I'm not pushing. I'm just... noting.”
