Testville

small hamlet

The Town Scandal

Three months ago, the hamlet's beloved elder Maren Ashwick was found dead in her cottage under mysterious circumstances — officially ruled a heart attack, but the local herbalist Pip Thistledown swears the tea leaves in her cup showed signs of nightshade poisoning. The miller Bram Colwick has been seen burning documents late at night ever since, and young Sera Dawnhollow quietly inherited a plot of land that everyone assumed would go to the church.

Bram Colwick

Human · Miller

B

Personality

Gruff, defensive, sweats under any scrutiny

Backstory

Bram has run Testville's only mill for twenty years and was deeply indebted to elder Maren Ashwick, who held the deed to his mill as collateral on a loan he never fully repaid. Since Maren's death, he has been burning old ledgers and correspondence, terrified that Father Aldric Voss will start asking financial questions on behalf of the church. He has recently begun bribing Constable Hetta Ironforge with free grain to look the other way.

Relationships

→Hetta Ironforge: bribing with grain to avoid investigation
→Father Aldric Voss: deeply fears his moral authority and prying questions
→Sera Dawnhollow: resents her inheritance and suspects she orchestrated Maren's death

Dialogue

“Mill's closed today. Come back tomorrow — or better yet, don't.”

“Maren? Gods rest her. A good woman. A very... thorough woman. Kept meticulous records, she did. *coughs* Not that it matters now.”

“You want to know what I was burning? Heh. Old grain invoices. Boring stuff. Nothing worth your time, traveler, I promise you that.”

Pip Thistledown

Halfling · Herbalist and hedge witch

P

Personality

Nervous, observant, compulsively honest to a fault

Backstory

Pip has operated a small herb stall at the edge of Testville for a decade and was one of the last people to see Maren Ashwick alive, having delivered her a weekly bundle of chamomile and dried rosehips. Pip identified the nightshade residue in Maren's teacup but was warned by Constable Hetta Ironforge to keep quiet, which has made Pip both paranoid and guilt-ridden. Pip secretly has a romantic longing for Sera Dawnhollow, which makes it almost impossible to suspect her — almost.

Relationships

→Sera Dawnhollow: secretly and painfully in love with
→Hetta Ironforge: threatened into silence by, now simmering with resentment
→Bram Colwick: suspects him of involvement in Maren's death

Dialogue

“I know what nightshade smells like. I *sell* nightshade. In small quantities. For warts. That's — that's not the point. The point is someone used it.”

“Hetta told me accidents happen to people who talk too much. Can you imagine? In *Testville*? We've got forty souls here and now we've got threats?”

“Please, just... be careful around the mill. And the rectory. And — oh, honestly, just be careful everywhere.”

Sera Dawnhollow

Half-Elf · Beekeeper and landowner

S

Personality

Charming, quietly ambitious, plays innocent with practiced ease

Backstory

Sera arrived in Testville five years ago with little more than a smile and a crate of beehives, and somehow charmed her way into becoming Maren Ashwick's closest companion in the elder's final years. She is the surprise inheritor of a meadow plot at the edge of town, which she claims Maren gifted freely out of affection, but which Father Aldric Voss believes was obtained through manipulation. Pip Thistledown's obvious affection for her is something she exploits shamelessly to keep the halfling from speaking too loudly.

Relationships

→Pip Thistledown: manipulates his affection to keep him quiet
→Father Aldric Voss: in a cold, polite war with over the legitimacy of her inheritance
→Bram Colwick: aware of his guilt and privately holds it over him as insurance

Dialogue

“Maren was like a grandmother to me. People who say otherwise never bothered to visit her, did they? I was *there*.”

“Oh, Pip is such a dear soul. A little excitable, a little prone to seeing shadows in sunny rooms — you know how herbalists get. All those fumes.”

“The land? Yes, it's mine now. Legally, properly, with a witnessed document. I do hope the good Father will come to peace with it. Grief makes people suspicious, doesn't it?”

Father Aldric Voss

Human · Cleric of a justice deity

F

Personality

Righteous, relentless, occasionally blind to his own pride

Backstory

Father Aldric has served Testville's tiny stone chapel for fifteen years and considered himself Maren Ashwick's spiritual guardian — so her leaving land to Sera Dawnhollow instead of the church felt like a personal betrayal from beyond the grave. He has been quietly conducting his own investigation, interviewing townsfolk and copying down inconsistencies in a leather journal he carries everywhere. He has a complicated history with Constable Hetta Ironforge, whom he trained as an acolyte before she abandoned the faith for the constable's post.

Relationships

→Hetta Ironforge: former mentor, now quietly disappointed and suspicious of her corruption
→Sera Dawnhollow: locked in a cold dispute over Maren's inheritance, believes she is dangerous
→Bram Colwick: knows about Bram's debt to Maren and is quietly building a case

Dialogue

“Justice is patient, traveler. It does not need to shout. It simply waits, and accumulates, and eventually — like a millstone — it comes down.”

“I trained Hetta Ironforge to know right from wrong. Whatever she's become since, that knowledge is still in her. I have to believe that.”

“Sera Dawnhollow smiles like someone who has rehearsed it. I am a man of faith, not suspicion — but even faith requires evidence.”

Hetta Ironforge

Dwarf · Village Constable

H

Personality

Pragmatic, morally compromised, deeply conflicted

Backstory

Hetta took up the constable's post in Testville after leaving Father Aldric Voss's chapel, believing she could do more good with a badge than a prayer book — and for years, she was right. But Bram Colwick's grain bribes started small and grew, and now Hetta has buried the herbalist Pip Thistledown's testimony about the nightshade and feels the weight of it every single morning. She genuinely liked Maren Ashwick, and her guilt is slowly curdling into something that might, if pushed, become courage.

Relationships

→Bram Colwick: accepting bribes from, but growing increasingly uneasy
→Father Aldric Voss: former student who fled his mentorship, still haunted by his moral code
→Pip Thistledown: threatened into silence, but privately knows Pip is telling the truth

Dialogue

“This is a quiet hamlet. People trip, people catch fevers, people die in their sleep. It happens. My job is to keep the living from killing each other.”

“*long pause* Pip Thistledown talks too much. That's all I'm saying. Don't go filling your head with half-baked herb-dreams.”

“Father Voss still thinks I'm the girl who swept his chapel floor. I'm not. I've made choices he wouldn't understand. I'm not sure I understand them either.”

Nola Wren

Tiefling · Traveling scribe and cartographer, currently lodging in Testville

N

Personality

Wry, sharp-tongued, magnetically curious

Backstory

Nola arrived in Testville two weeks ago, ostensibly to map the surrounding farmland for a distant merchant guild, but she has filled more pages about the hamlet's social tensions than its geography. She has struck up a peculiar friendship with Father Aldric Voss, who sees her outsider perspective as useful, and she has already caught Bram Colwick in two contradictory statements about the night of Maren's death. She finds Hetta Ironforge fascinating in the way one finds a cracked dam fascinating — beautiful, precarious, and interesting to watch.

Relationships

→Father Aldric Voss: unlikely ally and confidant, sharing notes on the investigation
→Bram Colwick: has caught him in contradictions and is quietly documenting them
→Hetta Ironforge: watches with detached fascination, waiting to see if she breaks toward justice or corruption

Dialogue

“I map roads for a living, but the most interesting paths I've found in Testville are entirely invisible. They run from a mill to a constable's post and back again.”

“Don't mind the tail. People usually stop noticing it once they decide whether they trust me. Have you decided?”

“Father Voss gives me Scripture. Pip gives me herbs I didn't ask for. Bram gives me suspicious glances. Testville is the most entertaining hamlet I've mapped in three years.”
