Now he lives in quiet terror that Maren Duskhollow will find proof enough to bring before the village elder, Seraphine Voss, whom he has been secretly courting and cannot afford to lose.

Petra came to Thornwick from inland with ink-stained fingers and big ambitions, landing a clerk's post under Cobb Reedfin who seemed like her ticket to something better. She altered three lines in the registry the night of the Silverscale catch, a crime that keeps her awake staring at the ceiling of her rented room above Aldric Brinewhistle's tavern. She has started slipping anonymous notes to Lira Coralweave, the village's shrine-keeper, half hoping the gods will sort out the mess she helped create.

He knows about Cobb's fraud because Maren told him in grief-soaked grief over cheap wine, and he has been quietly using that knowledge to ensure Cobb keeps his docking fee schedules favorable to Aldric's supply ships. He is also the only person in Thornwick who knows that village elder Seraphine Voss is not who she claims to be.

Seraphine arrived in Thornwick a decade ago under a different name, fleeing a past that involved a noble house, a fire, and decisions she cannot undo. She built a reputation for fairness as village elder, not knowing that Aldric Brinewhistle recognized her signet ring from a wanted broadsheet he keeps folded in his apron. She has genuine feelings for Cobb Reedfin despite his obvious flaws, and has begun quietly investigating the Silverscale incident after receiving a formal complaint she suspects was written by someone very small with ink-stained fingers.

Backstory
Lira has tended the seaside shrine to Melora for six years, and the fisherfolk bring her their offerings and their guilt in roughly equal measure. She has been receiving unsigned notes that describe, in increasing detail, exactly what happened the night the Silverscale was registered, and her goddess does not permit her to simply file them away. She grew up hearing stories of Maren Duskhollow from her own grandmother, also a fisher, and feels a debt of devotion to the old woman that makes the injustice done to her feel personal.
